It quickly became clear that Planetfall was written in the present-tense first person, which I don’t always get on with. I devoured it in a couple of days and immediately bought After Atlas…then, a few pages into that I bought the remaining two books.Īll of that came after my very first reaction, which was actually negative. Planetfall had me gripped early on, even while I was still trying to make sense of the world in my head. It didn’t take me long to realise that I was not going to be able to stop after the first book.

I use these sales as a way to find and pick up books that I might have otherwise missed, safe in the knowledge that if I don’t get on with them I’ve only spent £1 on each. It was in one of those £1 sales that Gollancz – the series’ publisher – runs on the Kindle Store every now and then. I came to Planetfall, the first book in the eponymous series, by accident. Set within the same future vision of our world, the two books nevertheless feature two completely different stories that compliment each other even as each stands on its own merits. It’s rare to find two books in a series that demonstrate an author’s versatility as well as Planetfall and After Atlas by Emma Newman.
